[Question] SAS3008 - Sanitize Support - Weird RTFRs

Describe what you need help with

Sanitize Erase / Status Commands via openSeaChest (and others) to... well any SSD I have tried on this HBA so far - Security Erase commands work fine and the RTFRs are .

When executing Sanitize commands via SAS3008 12Gbps HBAs I am seeing the command execute as expected.

However, when polling for progress with --progress sanitize - we are seeing no RTFRs - and the Sanitize output is incorrect. When running this command on the same drive - we see success and we are able to poll for Progress.

Similarly - HDParm outputs a similar response to openSeaChest when executing the Sanitize/Status commands - with there being very little information to go by.

Sanitize
Starting Sanitize Block Erase
If Sanitize appears to be taking much longer than expected, the system or HBA
may not be handling the sanitize in progress state correctly. If this happens
the next best thing to do is leave the drive powered on with the interface
cable(SATA / SAS HBA cable) disconnected. Sanitize will continue running
while the drive is powered on and the system will no longer be able to
interrupt or slow down the sanitize operation.
NOTE: On an HDD, the approximate overwrite time is 1.5-2 hours per terabyte
      of the native capacity of the drive. Reduced size for maxLBA does not
      reduce the time sanitize takes to overwrite the drive.
      On an SSD, the overwrite time will be much faster and varies depending
      on the capabilities of the SSD controller.

This all looks good - however, the issue comes when trying to issue the Sanitize Status command... we get no RTFRs coming back with the Sense Data - which in turn seems to then suggest that the drive is no longer Sanitizing - although a READ10 does then return an error as expected.

	This device has never been sanitized.

So this is a tricky one ... - does anyone know what could cause this to comeback with incomplete RTFRs? Therefore meaning we are not able to see the Progress Indication? Even though I know the command is running - and a few seconds longer than this to run - on a SAS2008 HBA - we are seeing the output correctly... strange behaviour.

Thanks for reporting this.
I've been tracking this exact problem since about May 2025 (it's in an internal issue tracker...probably should have mirrored it here).
I do not know what the cause is at this time.

We have observed the same thing with a previous generation card (SAS 2008/9200-8i) working, but it is having this exact same problem on a SAS3008/9300-8i.

Just to confirm, if you run the sanitize and status checks with HDParm instead of openSeaChest, does this issue show up in HDParm?
I have not yet confirmed this part myself as I have been tracking this as though it's an openSeaChest bug.

We've had a few other observations as well:

• If you write to the drive (pre-write for erase verification), then run sanitize, it always fails the progress check, specifically with the driver reporting a soft-error and suggesting a retry....retries never work though.
• If you don't pre-write, a lot of times a single drive does not indicate any issues....but sometimes it does.
• If you sanitize multiple drives at once, it always triggers the failure.

We suspected that adding in the POSIX/BSD style file locks on the drive handle in openSeaChest was affecting this, but when we removed this for internal testing, it was still failing from what we observed.

We did see some sanitize issues go away when going back to v24.08.1 so it seems as if something is different and triggering this, but I have not figured out what specifically is causing it.
If you use the previous v24.08 or v2408.1, does this issue go away?

Yes indeed - see the below HDPARM verbose outputs - there is not much different in their responses as to openSeaChest here.

I also have custom ATA C++ code to execute various ATA commands via ATA Passthrough - that respond the same way as both HDParm and openSeaChest - no RTFRs for the returned sense response even though they suggest ATA Passthrough information is available - so can confirm this is happening on a few tools now. I cannot share our outputs unfortunately, but they mirror the outputs of the other commands.

Part of my testing is to go back to previous kernels to see if this is due to a driver change or not.
I did see the Linux kernel has had patches to mpt3sas, but I don't know the structure of that driver well enough to know whether those would cause this issue.

The other thing that would be helpful is knowing if the newer 9400, 9500, or 9600 HBAs from Broadcom are also affected.
I know 9400 and 9500 use the same driver. Not sure what exactly the 9600 uses off the top of my head.

Knowing if these other HBAs are affected will be helpful. I am working to get some systems setup with newer HBAs and test this myself, but anyone that can post info from these other models will be helpful to figure out what exactly is affected.

I've narrowed the issue I've been tracking slightly.

There is some kind of timing problem where if there is no gap between running a pre-write pattern followed by sanitize overwrite, it triggers a soft error from the driver when polling for progress.

If I ran these steps manually from the command line, I would leave some idle time between each process I ran. When I put them into a script is when I ran into the problem.

It happens on Ubuntu 24.04 with the 6.10 kernel on a 9300. It does NOT happen in the same configuration with a 9600...but that has a different driver so I'm not surprised.

One difference is that I am getting the RTFR's back consistently when this bug does not happen. They are never blank like you were seeing in my tests.
I would not be shocked if these two issues are related though since all the other symptoms look identical.

Back to more debugging to find this timing problem...

The root cause of the error I've been seeing is due to BLKRRPART ioctl being called.
This is called automatically in openSeaChest when some operation that may affect partitions that are on the drive is modified (such as sanitizing a drive).
This instructs the Kernel to reread the partition table and doing some background updates to various files in the system.

We added this to openSeaChest when we had a bug report that sanitizing a drive with ext4 partitions meant it could not be reformatted with a new file system after erasing it (no matter which method). This call resolved that problem by clearing out something that was cached (unmounting the file systems first did not resolve the issue, so something held onto some cached info in the background I could not find).

You can also trigger this IOCTL with blockdev --rereadpt /dev/sdX or openSeaChest_Erase -d /dev/sgX --refreshfs. There are likely more methods than this to run this IOCTL, these are the ones I know and found through lots of searching and reading source code 😄

While this IOCTL instructs the kernel to read the partition table and it seems to do so immediately, on the mpt3sas driver something gets queued for later. After some indeterminate amount of idle time (most often within first 10 minutes of polling in openSeaChest) two commands are issued: Inquiry (allowed in sanitize) and synchronize cache (not allowed in sanitize).
I did not observe this issue on AHCI (motherboard and add-in SATA card) or mpi3mr (9600-8i) drivers that I also tested.

When the sync cache in the background fails, it retries a few times before giving up and disconnecting the drive from the system (sanitize is still running on the drive, you just cannot access it to poll for progress).

In openSeaChest I would see that the polling command would get the SG driver to report a host error of 0x0B which we translate to "soft error, retry?". Sense data was always empty/not returned.

So far my solution has been either: Add a 10 minute sleep after calling this IOCTL, or only issuing this IOCTL when the software is confident the drive is back into a state where it can accept reads, writes, flush/sync cache, verify commands again (sanitize success, ata security erase success, etc). I'm making code changes for the second option currently to roll out, but in certain cases a 10 minute delay may be an ok workaround with current builds.

Where this error is different is based on your shared output there is no trigger for this host error happening. Everything looks otherwise completely normal and it even reports that the driver has sense data available to report (driver status of 8h). So it seems like something in the driver level is not copying back the RTFRs to the sense data buffer to provide this extra information.
I did not see this error in my testing so I'm not sure exactly why this would be happening other than some other bug is occurring at a layer below the software (either driver or hba firmware). Now that I finally have this figured out on my current setup, I can try a different kernel like you saw this on, but if you have already found that updating the kernel resolved the issue, that would be good to know to save some time trying to debug this more.

Testing on a system with a 9400 has a different issue than I have seen all together.

On a 9400-8i when the system is sanitize overwriting multiple drives at once, for some unknown reason, all the commands eventually start timing out.
It does not matter if it's commands within openSeaChest or any other software. Even kernel issued commands start timing out. All commands that timeout are allowed to complete while sanitize is running according to T10 and T13 standards.

I'm testing a 9500 as well but it will take a while to get some results.

The common thing between 9300, 9400, and 9500 HBAs is that they all use the same mpt3sas driver. The 9200 uses mpt2sas (which is a symlink to mpt3sas now, however I think this is handled slightly differently internally in that module).

I was not able to repeat any issues on the 9600 which uses the mpi3mr driver, which is the same driver as the megaraid cards. Earlier IT/IR and Megaraid cards used different drivers, but they are the same going forward.

I am curious to understand what could be causing this myself, it does "feel" like this is down to the driver implementation rather than any software execution - since we see success in other configurations.
