Tanix TX3 S905X3 100Mbit boots only partially

This has CoreELEC and SLIMbox and I don't remember if I installed CE to the EMMC when I initially got it.

With this debian distro, it sees the 32GB boot USB stick as mmc1 and the internal EMMC as mmc2 and also an external USB keyboard but no discernible progress beyond that.

I booted CoreELEC and it turns out running from EMMC is not supported so that can be eliminated as a source of the problem

CE can be installed to EMMC on these boxes. But anyway, I guess you installed something else on that box as well (slimbox?) that modified the bootloader. So go back to the original Android image first. Then try again.

I will try that though my CE microSD may no longer boot.

I thought, incorrectly perhaps, that the only code used from the original box was what was needed to boot Debian, and that nothing was used once Debian was running.

Before going back from SlimBox to vendor Android, I thought I'd reestablish the baseline from before with Plucky.

It now boots and wired networking is fine but it fails to authenticate on either of my two wireless networks

I can't help you with that. But if I see problems with a USB drive that sometime is recognized and sometimes isn't, Wifi that can't authenticate.. It often is due to a bad power supply. Maybe you can try a better power supply, or start without all kind of other USB devices attached, or maybe with shorter power cables.

It should be, but unfortunately that is not completely true... Ther is some "firmware" running in secure world that some kernel drivers communicate with. Ans sometimes there are clocks or power domains that are enabled by the booloader and are "forgotten" in kernel drivers. Any way, long and boring story ;-)

Worth ruling out and I will try to dig up another power supply.

FWIW, this power supply successfully powers up the more power hungry S905X4 box.
