# Back Defense and Prevention Class
2+
**Class Length:** 1 hour
3+
4+
This class focuses on developing defensive skills and prevention techniques against back control progression. Students will learn to defend at each stage of back control development, from initial standing contact through various levels of control. The class follows a progressive flow: standing separation to bodylock, bodylock to turtle breakdown, turtle to hip control, and then defending against increasingly dominant back control positions.
5+
6+
This class consists of several progressive drills that build upon each other. Each drill is available as an individual game file for reference.

## Conclusion
125+
126+
Finish class with Q&A and some live rolling starting from various back control positions. Focus on applying the defensive techniques learned during class, particularly the progression from early prevention to late-stage escapes.
127+
128+
**Key Defensive Concepts:**
129+
- Defenders should consistently fight to separate the attacking player's hands to break seatbelt grips
130+
- Focus on hand fighting as the primary defensive strategy before attempting position changes
131+
- Use systematic approach to escape: separate hands, address hooks, then improve position
132+
133+
Attacking players should practice applying controlled pressure while defending players focus on the escape techniques and defensive positioning learned in the drills.

## Details
7+
**Time:** 2 minutes each level, 6 minutes total
8+
9+
### Level 1: No Hooks

12+
13+
### Level 2: Both Hooks
14+
**Attacking Player Position:** Sitting up chest to back with seatbelt grip and both hooks in

19+
**Defending Player Win:** Escape chest to back connection while defending choke attempts
20+
21+
## Instructions
22+
1. Complete each level for 2 minutes before progressing to the next
23+
2. Attacking player maintains the specified level of control starting from sitting up chest to back position
24+
3. All levels start with attacker having seatbelt grip established
25+
4. Defending player works to achieve the win condition for that level
26+
5. Reset to starting position after each successful escape
27+
6. If defending player cannot escape within 30 seconds, reset anyway
28+
7. After completing all 3 levels, switch roles
29+
8. Complete the full progression twice (once for each partner as defender)
30+
31+
## Coaching Points
32+
### Level 1 - No Hooks:
33+
**For defenders:**
34+
- Focus on turning towards the attacking player
35+
- Use shoulder rolls and hip movement to create space
36+
- Work to break the seatbelt grip systematically
37+
38+
**For attackers:**
39+
- Maintain chest-to-back pressure and seatbelt grip
40+
- Work to control without using hooks
41+
42+
### Level 2 - Both Hooks:
43+
**For defenders:**
44+
- Address one hook at a time while maintaining seatbelt defense
45+
- Use bridges and hip escapes to create space
46+
- Focus on removing hooks before attempting to turn
47+
48+
**For attackers:**
49+
- Maintain both hooks and seatbelt grip throughout
50+
- Use hooks to control defender's hip movement
51+
52+
### Level 3 - Both Hooks with Chokes:
53+
**For defenders:**
54+
- Prioritize choke defense while working escape techniques
55+
- Keep chin down and hands fighting choke attempts
56+
- Stay calm and work systematically despite submission pressure
57+
58+
**For attackers:**
59+
- Attempt realistic choke setups while maintaining control
60+
- Focus on proper choke mechanics rather than forcing submissions
61+
- Allow escapes when properly executed by defender

5+
6+
## Details
7+
**Time:** 3 minutes, 2 partners or 6 minutes total - switching back and forth
8+
9+
### Attacking Player
10+
**Position:** Behind your partner who is in turtle position
11+
**Objective:** Establish hip control and work to break down the turtle position
12+
**Win:** Get both hooks in with seatbelt grip, or break down turtle to hip and establish chest-to-back contact with seatbelt grip
13+
14+
### Defending Player
15+
**Position:** In turtle position with your partner behind you
16+
**Objective:** Prevent hip control and improve your position
17+
**Win:** Successfully turn to guard or stand up while preventing hip control
18+
19+
## Instructions
20+
1. Defending player starts in turtle position (hands and knees)
21+
2. Attacking player starts behind the turtle with hands on the defender's back
22+
3. Attacking player works to establish hip control by getting their chest over the defender's hips
23+
4. Defending player maintains turtle structure and works to prevent hip control
24+
5. Defending player can win by turning to guard or standing up
25+
6. Attacking player wins by getting both hooks in with seatbelt grip, or by breaking down the turtle to hip and establishing chest-to-back contact with seatbelt grip
26+
7. Reset after each win condition is met
27+
8. Switch roles after time expires
28+
29+
## Coaching Points
30+
For the attacking player:
31+
- Keep your chest low and over your partner's hips
32+
- Use your weight to apply downward pressure
33+
- Control the defender's far hip to prevent turning
34+
- Work to establish hooks when the opportunity arises
35+
- Focus on breaking down the turtle to get to the hip position
36+
- Once on the hip, work to establish chest-to-back contact with seatbelt grip
37+
- Be patient and maintain pressure rather than rushing
38+
- Use your legs to control the defender's movement
39+
- Keep your head position low to prevent the defender from standing
40+
41+
For the defending player:
42+
- Maintain a strong turtle base with hands and knees
43+
- Keep your elbows tight to your body
44+
- Use your head to create space and prevent chest-to-hip contact
45+
- Look for opportunities to turn towards the attacking player
46+
- Keep moving to prevent the attacker from settling
47+
- Use hip movement to create angles for escape
48+
- Focus on getting your knees under your hips if flattened
49+
- Work to establish frames if the attacker gets too close
