The repository contains and .htacces file for apache, maybe there is a good place where to document how a config file could look like for having a working solution with other servers?

For example with lighttpd 1.4.y following config is more or less equivalent with the rewrite rule:

server.modules += ( "mod_rewrite" )
url.rewrite-if-not-file = ( ".*" => "index.php" )

FYI: even simpler: url.rewrite-if-not-file = ( "" => "index.php" ) skips the unnecessary regex.
