Problem

Users reported Redis Cluster failures with the error "EVALSHA - all keys must map to the same key slot" when using LiteLLM's rate limiting features with Redis Cluster v6.22+. This error occurred in the parallel request limiter when executing Lua scripts for batch rate limiting operations.

Root Cause

The async_register_script method in RedisCache was calling Redis Cluster's script_load() and evalsha() methods synchronously instead of asynchronously. This caused coroutine objects to be passed where actual values were expected:

# Old (broken) behavior
script_sha = redis_client.script_load(script)  # Missing await - returns coroutine
# Later...
return redis_client.evalsha(script_sha, ...)   # Missing await - script_sha is coroutine object

Solution

  1. Fixed async operations: Added proper await keywords to Redis Cluster script operations in async_register_script
  2. Deferred script initialization: Modified the parallel request limiter to initialize scripts asynchronously on first use rather than synchronously in __init__
  3. Maintained backward compatibility: Ensured standalone Redis continues to work unchanged

Key Changes

litellm/caching/redis_cache.py

  • Made async_register_script method properly async
  • Added await to script_load() call for Redis Cluster
  • Added await to evalsha() call in returned script callable

litellm/proxy/hooks/parallel_request_limiter_v3.py

  • Added _initialize_scripts() method for deferred async script registration
  • Modified rate limiting methods to call script initialization before use
  • Added proper type annotations to prevent mypy errors

Example

Before this fix, Redis Cluster users would see:

redis.exceptions.RedisClusterException: EVALSHA - all keys must map to the same key slot

After this fix, the same operations work correctly because the async Redis Cluster operations are properly awaited.

Testing

  • ✅ Verified fix resolves the async operation issue with mock Redis Cluster
  • ✅ Confirmed backward compatibility with standalone Redis
  • ✅ Validated proper hash tag usage ensures keys map to same Redis Cluster slot
  • ✅ Security scan passed with no issues
  • ✅ Code passes linting and type checking

Impact

Users can now use Redis Cluster with LiteLLM's rate limiting features without encountering the EVALSHA key slot error. The fix maintains full backward compatibility with existing standalone Redis installations.

Fixes the issue reported in the original problem where Redis Cluster configurations would fail with rate limiting enabled.
