using the public variable releaseMode (true or false), you can make the motor auto turn off after stepping (when true), or working as used to be (using false);

    small_stepper->releaseMode = true;
    small_stepper->step(step);

using this will prevent stepper from overheating, and allow you to manually move it

This as tested using an Arduino Mega 2560, with the stepper on ports 41, 42, 43 and 44. It was not tested with a 2 or 5 wires stepper, nor with other arduino board models

This seems a bit complex, IMHO. You can set the motor pins LOW after each run.
